Round River Conservation Studies - Patagonia, Chile Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I can say will full confidence that I will continue to learn from my time in Patagonia for the rest of my life. The people I met and the ideas I was introduced to completely changed my way of thinking. I met lifelong friends, defied my perceived physical limits, and was constantly having fun.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The adventure, constant-backpacking that we expected was never cut short. But it was also nice to have a few days in between trips at homebase with a bathroom and kitchen.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Spending most of our time in the field, there wasnt much culture to be integrated in (besides the Guanaco), but whenever we got a chance to be with local Gauchos or Chileans we were always encouraged to soak it up.

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? splurge on wine while on boats. cheap wine does not bode well with seasickness.

Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Always be actively involved. Even if you are not one to hop into every conversation, be constantly listening to and trying to understand what is being said. Write down vocab and grammer.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • PATAGONIA- being constantly surrounded by the incredible landscape
  • people-the leaders, CONAF park guards, and group
* What could be improved?
  • communication
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had packed less, but also differently. We were not hiking the whole time and had basecamp to store things in. It would have been nice to have normal clothes to wear in town.
