Penn State Altoona: Traveling - Ivyside Pride: European Choir Tour

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile and it was a great chance to go back over to the same region I studied in last year!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month
The term and year this program took place: Spring 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

We had three concerts and a workshop; it was a great experience! The only thing that could have been better was the preparation class for this trip.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Our tour guide Isabel was amazing, and so was Doc our conductor. They were both so helpful and encouraging, I would love to study abroad with them again.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

The food that was provided to us was great, and it was a little challenging to find restaurants and struggle with the language. I would've liked to have seen more help with getting things to eat and restaurants and stuff like that in the pre-departure class.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Someone got sick on the trip and our tour guide helped us out. But we didn't really know what exactly to do...

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Restaurants are more expensive than you think!

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Two years
Language acquisition improvement?

My French improved so much more, but I had never even taken German before; and the phrases we were given helped a little; and if we were in Germany for more than a day then I think I would have eventually gotten the hang of it.
