By (Political Science and Government, Middlebury College) - abroad from 01/20/2022 to 05/20/2022 with

New York University, Tisch Study Abroad: Prague - 35mm Filmmaking in Prague

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I have a network of filmmakers to collaborate with and the experience I needed to come back and finish my thesis.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Even though I paid for their most expensive dorm option I was placed in the most cluttered suite despite better options existing. Seems like Midd kids just get shoved around which I wouldn't mind if I wasn't paying 3x for a single but in the only triple.

* Food:

up to us

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

At the end of the day, no program comes close elsewhere let alone at Midd to give a student the professional level of experience and instruction in directing and as a DP– to work with 35 mm on your own student project is truly a must take opportunity.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 3 meals a day... 200$ basic. Lunch had to be eaten out every day + expenses such as tram which weren't provided for the whole time
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? unfortunately you just have to save up before heading over and consider cooking for yourself. that being said, groceries a relatively expensive.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Michael Gahut. Legend although oldschool, we need more professors like him.
  • getting 24m of 35mm per person
  • dorm location (cool to live with music students)
* What could be improved?
  • more organized housing/room distribution
  • more organized syllabus for NYU activities
  • more freedom to grab meals with professors when invited (we were in class and on sets without masks but couldn't for example, grab a meal as a class.)
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Again, any prep ahead would go a long way for Midd students. come with ideas and a crack at a script.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'

Credit Transfer Issues: So I will say this about all the forms we have to fill out– we have to do it twice! reviews, forms, and most importantly safety courses! Its the same program for midd abroad and NYU so even just a little coordination would go a long way.
