i gained more independence but i did not feel as if my language skills improved a lot.

yes, but i would only go for one semester instead of a year.

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? everyone tells you to go for a year and going for 1 year was fun but after a semester the freshness and fun kind of dies so maybe consider going for a semester.
