Designed for students with advanced Spanish language proficiency, the Middlebury School in Uruguay offers a fully immersive academic and cultural experience in one of South America's most welcoming and intellectually vibrant capitals. Students enroll directly in courses alongside Uruguayan peers at one of Middlebury's three partner institutions, the Universidad Católica del Uruguay, the Universidad de la República, or Universidad ORT Uruguay, choosing from a wide range of disciplines taught entirely in Spanish. Guided by the Middlebury Language Pledge, participants deepen their language skills through meaningful engagement with local classmates, host families, and the broader community.

Uruguay is widely recognized for its strong democratic traditions, commitment to social equity, and rich cultural heritage. Its capital, Montevideo, is home to nearly half of the country's population and offers an ideal balance of urban life and relaxed coastal living. Situated along the Río de la Plata, the city combines historic architecture, lively public spaces, beautiful beaches, and a thriving arts and music scene with a welcoming atmosphere that encourages authentic cultural exchange. Montevideo's vibrant neighborhoods, cafés, bookstores, theaters, and markets provide countless opportunities to practice Spanish while experiencing everyday life in Uruguay.

With relatively few U.S. study abroad students, Montevideo offers an especially authentic immersion experience. The city's approachable scale, strong university culture, and distinctive blend of European and Afro-Uruguayan influences create an exceptional environment for developing advanced language proficiency while gaining a deeper understanding of Uruguay's history, society, and place within Latin America.
