Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury – CMRS Oxford Humanities Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot from my courses.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

With one exception, I did not find the administration very helpful. They would often act aggressively when pushed on issues students brought to them. I know a few students felt bullied by the Senior Tutors. Once a staff member brought out my medical records and started reading them in front of another person to discount an issue I presented to her.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

One of our junior deans was often walking around drunk in the building and acted inappropriately towards the students in the building. She also had another person living in the building despite this being against the building policies.

* Food:

The food in Keble lacked variation and I therefore chose to make my own food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The administration made no effort for the exchange students to meet with actual Oxford students. They did, however, make a "play date" with other American students studying abroad at another Oxford college. The lack of social integration is perhaps what I missed the most during my time at the CMRS.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

The clinic we could go to was very helpful and was covered by the insurance we had as CMRS students.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

In retrospect, I wish I went for a program at another college where students are directly enrolled at the University of Oxford and live among the actual Oxford students.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No
