About

Spend a summer at the German School and you'll experience the single most effective method for rapid language acquisition: a total immersion environment. Founded in 1915 as the first of the Language Schools, the German School has decades of experience in helping students achieve true fluency in German
language and culture.

In class, you'll benefit from our emphasis on meaningful, real-life communication—building your language skill set while learning to navigate the streets of Berlin, discuss German philosophy, or entertain guests. Outside the classroom, you'll participate in organized in-language cocurricular activities—including soccer, theater, choir, yoga, and chess—each designed to help you build new vocabulary while developing cultural fluency.

We also offer an MA in German will allow you to focus on a variety of topics, including German culture, history, literature, art, theater, politics, economics, and
linguistics. You may choose to earn your MA in a single year, by combining one summer in Vermont with an academic year in Berlin or Mainz, or by studying for four summers on the Middlebury campus in Vermont.
