Florence is like Disney World. Past Review

Lorenzo de' Medici – Florence

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much more than I expected to. I can't even explain how much more independent I feel now. It was a semester of firsts, and it was the best four months of my life.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes were pretty similar to what I'm used to as far as what is expected of the students. They were a little easier, but I also took all elective classes, so I had fun!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I think the administration did a really good job. A lot of my friends complained about our dean not being very good, but I thought the faculty was fine. The advisers were really caring and helpful.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in an apartment with 5 other girls. It had 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, living room, and 2 bathrooms. It was in the PERFECT location. It came with bedding, towels, dishes, a tv, an ironing board, clothes washer, drying rack. We had a full sized fridge which was nice. We ended up getting kicked out of our apartment the last week we were there, because the Jersey Shore cast was moving in to the apartment below ours. But LdM got us a nice place to stay for the last week and compensated us.

* Food:

Two words: Gusta Pizza. (It's on the other side of the Arno River, just a couple of blocks of walking. My friends and I always got our pizzas to go, since it's so crowded. And we would walk to the Pitti Palace and sit on the big open area there to eat.) Also, Trattoria Marios near the Mercato Centrale has to-die-for bistecca. Split it with someone to save on money, because they're huge!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We got emails about some really cool things going on in Florence. One of them was a Taste festival, where we got to sample tons of different gourmet food items. There was a chocolate festival in Florence in February which was awesome. There was an MTV concert with Italian artists at Santa Croce one time. There's just always something going on in that town. LdM arranges some cool things, too. I went to a soccer game with LdM. I also went to a chocolate tasting at the school, and a gelato-making at a place near the school.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I brought pepper spray with me, because I was afraid. I never felt like I needed it. Florence is safe as long as you're not walking around alone at night in a back alley. (Duh.) My roommate broke her ankle while we were there. If anything like that happens where you need to go to a doctor, CALL YOUR ADVISOR! They will help you through everything.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent probably about $100 a week on food, depending on how often we ate out. As far as other expenses (weekend trips, etc.) I probably spent about $1000 a month. Spring break I spent $1000. We went to Rome for 2 days, Naples for 2, Rome for another day, and then Athens for 3 days. Best trip ever. Try to plan trips on your own (instead of using Euroadventures or other companies who rip you off. Get Rick Steves Italy so you know what to do and how to do it. Go to hostelworld.com to book your hostels.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? We had to pay for a permit to stay. It was a couple hundred dollars, and we didn't even need it. Our school made us get it so we wouldn't be illegally staying in Italy, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't necessary since we had a permit to stay. There are also course fees for some classes. Mine were from 80 to 100 euro each, I think.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? none
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I didn't really learn Italian. Most people spoke English anyway. I lived with Americans, too. So my Italian is still very limited.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I was looking for a break from a tough school and touch classes and horrible weather. Florence gave that to me. I loved all my classes, all my teachers. I didn't know anyone when I came, but I left with lifelong friends, and I can't wait to go back.

Jewelry Making I

Course Department: JWY 180 F
Instructor: Werner Altinger
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Really interesting. It was fun and I made a lot of cool jewelry to take home. The worst part about this class is that it is a 5 hour period, which is a really long time to sit at a work bench. But if you bring your ipod, the time goes by faster.

The Built Environment of Florence

Comments: It was fun. We got to take field trips around the city every week. I learned a lot about the history of Florence and the buildings that are there. I wasn't as interested in it towards the end, though, but I'm glad I took the class! Also really easy.
