Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

In my home university, we have a similar summer program so in terms of intensity and academic rigor, I was not too overwhelmed. However, you really need to come prepared to soak in as much information as fast as you can because time moves quickly! Too quickly if you ask me. I wish I had more time to keep learning. The resources were plentiful and it was actually surprisingly easily to find the supplies I needed. Some books used in the other courses were recommended to be brought with the student when they came to Korea however, since it would be easier to acquire those specific English Academic books elsewhere. Photocopy services were available as well!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Really helpful and spoke great English so there was hardly a language barrier. They were very accommodating to the requests that I had made and also worked efficiently and very quickly.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I enjoyed my arrangements especially for the price I paid, however I think with the influx of students in my batch, they had a hard time accommodating all the students and some of my friends were a little inconvenienced when applying for their dorms.

* Food:

Korean food is amazing! Although the program itself does not really have food included, there was a cafeteria that students could avail of and there were plenty of affordable places near the campus. There was lots of variety in terms of cuisine, ambiance, and even the eating culture (ex. takeout, drinking places, fast food, sit down restaurants, etc)

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I spent a lot of time with international students and not so much the Korean people. I got to see a lot of different cultures but for the local culture, it was up to me to research and find my own areas to visit. They provided a few programs that students could participate in, however there were limited slots so not everyone could join everything. There was a student information desk we could go to and ask for advice but it was mainly the student's initiative to really try to integrate into the local culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have an experience with any healthcare issues but we were informed very early on in the program about the different clinics and hospitals available to us (both a clinic and a hospital were available on campus) and even gave us tips about which hospitals accepted international health insurance.

* Safety:

I felt very safe in this country. I do not use the public transportation system in my home country but in Korea it very easy to understand and with the use of the internet and technology, it's so easy to get around. It was very calm for me, I did not see any incidents or anything as a cause for alarm.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

It was an amazing experience! I would obviously change the classes I would take so that my classes can still be credited but other than that, I loved having time to just explore the city.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Food expenses alone could range from a little under $4 to over $8 a meal depending on where you would eat and that does not even include transportation fees and any fees you could incur with activities that you do with friends.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200/week

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

We would get a slight reprimand if we spoke in English in class. Not too strict, you could search up words and speak slowly.

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

  • Activities
  • Dormitory
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? The dormitories are really not horrible, don't be too afraid about the unknown. Also try not to stick to people you already know because it will be harder to make new friends.

The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
