By (Berea College) - abroad from 05/12/2019 to 05/26/2019 with

KIIS: Segovia - Experience Spain Summer Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes it was worthwhile. I had never been abroad so I got to see a new culture.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Our class was great! We weren't assigned a lot of outside work so we could explore the city more. It was around 4 hours of class a day though but it was interesting topic so it wasn't too bad. Only one book was needed and we could get the older edition. Any resources other than that were provided

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Our coordinator cared a lot about our group but she was hard to contact because of a problem with the cell service

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Our host mom was kind. Even though my Spanish was limited, she still made me feel welcome. Very beautiful home within a reasonable walking distance to school.

* Food:

Our host mom made all the meals and they were good. I am a picky eater and I liked pretty much everything she made.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It was hard to meet other people in that area, but the fact that we were there for such a short time was a part of that.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Some students got sick on the trip (not me personally). They were taken care of, taken to the doctor, and got medicine quickly.

* Safety:

I felt safe most of the time we were there. At night it could be scary but if you are walking with someone else it'll be fine.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I could've not spend any money at all besides the cost paid to KIIS and survived since all expenses were paid through KIIS.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $50
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Try not to eat out often

Reasons For Studying Abroad

Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'

Comments: Our professor was amazing! She did not give us a ton of homework so we were able to enjoy ourselves in a new country. We went out for class on some days. There was a lot of discussion involved too.
