Overall Experience
I gained so much from this experience, the most tangible of which was my increased capability to speak and understand Spanish. I would definitely say that my experience was worthwhile as I have grown so much through it and can honestly say that I am a better and more well-rounded person because of it. - Berea College View Entire Review
I learned to navigate in a new country and be okay with uncertainty at times. I learned to let go of language insecurities. - Berea College View Entire Review
It was definitely worthwhile. I gained knowledge about the people and culture of mexico as well as the perspective about the American culture. I progressed in the language through my classes, and I was able to learn about the bilingualism within their culture of Mexican Spanish and the Mayan language and culture. - Berea College View Entire Review

I learned firsthand about the culture of Mexico, and got to meet some great people! The food was good, and different than the food we assume to be Mexican here. The heat was intense, but a good climate change overall! - Northern Kentucky University View Entire Review
yes, very! I definitely improved with my language and speaking skills! - Berea College View Entire Review
Though I could have chose a program closer related to my interests, the program provided a very holistic experience by offering excursion experience but leaving the rest to the student to discover. - Berea College View Entire Review

About

The KIIS Summer program in Merida, Mexico begins with a visit to the colonial town of Valladolid, the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, and the wonderful beaches of the Mayan Riviera. From there, the program shifts to the city of Merida, an ideal setting for students to study Spanish and experience Mexican art, culture, and history. During this five-week program, students take KIIS-specific courses on the campus of the Colegio de Negocios Internacionales (CNI), a private business college in a comfortable neighborhood of Merida.

Capital of the Yucatan, Merida is a very beautiful, safe, and progressive city. With a population approaching one million, Merida boasts a fascinating blend of Mexican, Mayan, and European cultural influences, evident on its narrow colonial streets, picturesque plazas, and the majestic Paseo Montejo. Both quaint and modern, Merida has great shops and markets (jewelry, hammocks, and the classic Guayabera shirt), cheap eats and fine cuisine, festivals, lively music ("Noche Mexicana" every Saturday), and lovely universities.
