Tampere, which achieved university status in 1966, is one of the largest universities in Finland. The university does not have a campus as such; classes are offered in Tampere’s downtown area and in the towns of Hämeenlinna and Pori. Also affiliated with the university are the University Library, the Language Center, the Computer Center, the Center for Peace Research, the Institute for Extension Studies, the Research Institute for Social Sciences, the Institute of Medical Technology, the Tampere School of Public Health, and the Finnish Social Science Data Archive. Students at the university may study at other institutions in and near Tampere, such as Tampere University of Technology. Total enrollment: 15 000 (approx. 1 000 international students).
