Madrid Summer Abroad: Life-changing and Unforgettable Past Review

By (Marketing, John Carroll University) for

ISA Study Abroad in Madrid, Spain

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes. It truly was life-changing. I think I matured more in 2 months than I did my entire time at college! I have considered moving to Spain after graduation.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Great location, great apartment. However, we were not treated as hospitably as I had planned. Our host family seemed to think of us as burdens.

* Food:

Small quantities.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The weekend trips were so much fun and memorable! Also, we were in Madrid during the world cup- which made futbol nights really fun!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I spoke Spanish daily; however, most of the students spoke English, and this made it difficult for me to improve my Spanish. Living with a host family significantly helped because they did not speak any English.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would tell them to try to speak the language of the country CONSTANTLY. My only regret is that I did not work hard enough to improve my Spanish as much as I wanted to.
