Argentina: mi amor!! Past Review

By (Spanish/Political Science, Washington State University - Pullman campus) for

ISA Study Abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Definitely worthwhile! I plan on studying abroad again! My teacher could not have said it better, "we are all the same, just different." You gain a new perspective on life and you come to find out that you really do only have one life and you better make it count. So experience all life has to offer and accept every culture even though it is not like your own.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Workload was great, and I loved my teacher at the university which makes a big difference in learning. Everyone was so helpful and there were plenty of opportunities to practice spanish. There was not a big difference in the educational system except maybe the grading; they use a number scale and when you return to the US it gets translated into a letter grade.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

ISA was wonderful. They were knowledge in about every aspect. If you wanted good ice cream or maybe a new piercing the faculty would tell you the best places to go. They tutored you if you wanted, supported you when you got into any situation. They were soooo nice! Everything was met, and it was nice to have access to computers in the office. Sometimes I wish they had the office open at night. The program size was great as well in the respect that we were a whole on some things but then you each where in groups to make it easier to have people in the same boat as you. I wouldnt have been able to get through it without them!!!!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

First housing experience was not very good. The host mom was just getting too old and crabby and things were not very clean. After she took some of my money without asking from my closet and not showing up to cook us dinner a couple times I told my program advisor and he said time to go!!! Then I moved in with another host mom and she was fantastic!! I cant express the change I felt and how warm and inviting the apartment was and how awesome she was too!! Happy and loved life and when we would talk she would have the dictionary out when she or I didnt understand. It totally changed my whole perspective on living with a host family and i said to myself, "so this is what it's supposed to be like?" :)

* Food:

They have great steak/beef and their empanadas and dulce de leche ice cream are to die for but overall not impressed and couldnt wait to come home to GREAT PIZZA! All the restaurants serve the same thing but there are defnitely great spots that students are just going to have to discover themselves. Overall the food was not spectacular but some things were fabuloso!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I went to Patagonia, Iguazu Falls, Urauguay, Machu Picchu and countless other adventures and loved every minute of it! Every trip brought something different and I loved every where I went! The landscape is so diverse and unique that you cant help but love all of it!!!!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The program expressed how important it was to stay safe!The program assisted you with easy access to healthcare and assisting you with anything you needed. I didnt need anything specific but i did take precautions like the yellow fever vaccine and such to be on the safe side. I felt very safe and was well taken care of.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

Everyone! My host mom, friends, other students, program leaders and just about anyone who could speak spanish. You did need to use the host language because everything is in spanish. Everyone knew a little english but sometimes they would look at you and just automatically speak english or if you were trying to speak they would go slowly.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? GO FOR IT!!! Even though there are things out of your control sometimes I would not trade it for the world! I met so many great people and friendships that I know will last a lifetime and experiences I know I will carry forever! If you are afraid to go alone, dont be!! Everyone is in the same boat you are and it is so easy to make friends in the program! Just relax and have a blast!! You will NOT come back disappointed!!
