Culture Shock Goes Great with Naan Bread Past Review

By (Berea College) - abroad from 02/01/2016 to 05/13/2016 with

IISAC: Odisha - Science Semester Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned that nothing is as it seems. Western culture loves to portray India as just a poor country that is dirty and overpopulated. But the people of India are just trying to live and be happy just like we are. We take so much for granted in America, I appreciate the little things so much more.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I would say that for the classes I was taking outside of my major, the work was about the same load as my home college. However, my computer science class did not offer much homework; it was heavily lecture/note-taking oriented and then I would be given an exam.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The teachers and study abroad advisors were good, they answer questions when I had them and when I need anything they were quick with following up. I would say, that there were few times where las minute inconvenient changes occurred (small things like class being cancelled for an Indian holiday that I wasn't warned about or having to reschedule some classes on weekly basis.)

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I live in a guest house, it was awesome. However, living in hostels with other students would have given me more of an Indian college experience but the hostels were under renovation so I lived inn the guest house. I got hotel treatment, it was great,

* Food:

Indian food is the bomb.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I am a people person, I got involved with a lot of activities on campus at the university. I blended in pretty well and even tried to learn the language.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had no health issues while participating in this program. I will say that some people may have trouble adjusting to spicy foods and could have some minor stomach irritation, but after about two weeks I had no issues with eating the traditional food. Also there was a hospital that was located on the school's campus so if you had any issues you could get immediate medical attention.

* Safety:

India is very high-populated so you will always be constantly surrounded by hundreds of people at any given time. On campus safety was great, there were 24 hour guards taking shifts around the entire campus. However, as stated before when out in the streets or in public you have to beware of pickpockets and make sure that you are not out by yourself past 10pm. Buddy system!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I chose this program specifically because it would have no real reminders of Western culture, I wanted to be completely submerged in a new experience. Even though I had some minor issues, overall I loved this program and wish I could have stayed longer. Most of my issues were First World problems, anyway.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

1 American dollar = 64 Indian dollars, I was living the good life.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $7.81 (500 rupees) However, food was included so this was strictly food/snacks that I bought at my own discretion.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't get too caught up in the rate of exchange. Though the American dollar is worth more in India, they still add up.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

I even took an elective to try to learn the language.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Basic Hindi
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Hindi is nothing like the romantic languages, there are no similarities to English grammar or structure. The best way to practice is to go out on the streets and try to talk to people, they will laugh but they will help.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • It was in India.
  • The students are very welcoming to internationals/ foreign exchange students.
  • The culture was completely different from what I am used to.
* What could be improved?
  • It would be nice to live in a hostel instead of a guest house.
  • More classes with local students
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew that classes are more lecture oriented so I could have prepared myself to come up with a new studying strategy for myself.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
