What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to be self-sufficient, how to adapt to new situations, and make new relationships with all different types of people. I also learned how many amazing cultures and opportunities there are in the world, and we should take advantage of all that we can. It was absolutely worthwhile, and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was much different - extensive reading lists were given at the beginning of the course and study was expected to be conducted independently and at the student's own discretion. For the most part, the courses had only one assessment at the end of the semester, a situation that had both pros and cons. The teachers were truly invested in their subject, however, and truly made learning their field of study interesting and enjoyable. The personal interest they took in their subject was impressive, and they truly seemed to care more about their students understanding the material and developing a love for the subject rather than putting pressure on the students to learn specifics and get graded. I enjoyed the general atmosphere and attitude of instruction better here than in American education systems, although the lack of frequent assessment didn't offer the most pressing incentive to keep on top of the outside reading.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The advisors and program coordinators were extremely friendly, helpful, and accommodating and seemed truly invested in the well-being and happiness of the study abroad students. I was more than impressed by their preparation and conducting of orientation and other activities. They hosted two dinners - a welcome and a farewell dinner - and two weekend trips which I found extremely well put together, fun, and perfect for seeing parts of the country I wouldn't have otherwise. I was beyond happy with the program I chose.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in a 3-person apartment off campus, right in the city center of Dublin. The accommodations were excellent - including good kitchen, bathroom, and laundry service facilities - in great condition and I felt very safe.

* Food:

The food was very similar to American cuisine, and for the most part students were expected to procure their own food through grocery shopping or eating at restaurants - no meal plan was available. I had no issues with the food situation.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Everyone in the city and country in general was extremely friendly, helpful, and interesting. The general atmosphere of Dublin/Ireland itself made me feel acclimated and included, and my study abroad program offered information, tips, and trips that allowed me to feel even more integrated. I liked attending a university not meant solely for study abroad students, for this gave me a more real and authentic sense of inclusion in the city.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had no issues with my health or well-being while in Dublin, but I know a few of my friends who did experience health issues were well taken care of by IFSA-Butler.

* Safety:

I felt extremely safe due to both the efforts of my program and the climate of Dublin. I found the city itself to be very safe and non-threatening, and the advice and information provided by our program advisors helped me feel even more aware and safer. Additionally, a security guard was present 24/7 at the entrance to my apartment complex, so I felt very secure while living there.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

While the city was somewhat expensive, with common sense and an idea of your budget, a student could easily finance studying abroad here. Food is not outrageously expensive, and the only real expenses would occur from going out to restaurants/pubs or traveling around the country or others.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? No
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Roughly $50-100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Learn how to cook budget meals (chicken, pasta, tuna) and keep leftovers. Food is often sold in bulk packages so cooking for one means a person will have quite a bit of food leftover. It is easy to make your food and money stretch this way.
