IFSA: Cairns - James Cook University

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Totally worth the while. It has expanded my cultural awareness and helped make me realize I want to travel and see more of the wonders of the world.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload is not very strenuous at all and as long as you are interested in the classes you are taking, you will find them comparable if not easier than American courses. They have a different grading scale and class schedule (tutorials and lectures are split).

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Our on site support from IFSA-Butler was pretty much nonexistent and not very helpful. She was located in Townsville so if she did come up to visit, she would spend all her time with the boys in our program and not even tell the girls that she was in town.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

The local supermarkets have plenty of options for food and down town has amazing farmer markets on the weekend.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program set up great adventures like a ride in the Cable Cars over the rainforest and eating down town at a local Aussie cuisine restaurant. They also provided us like 100$ for the Walk About Club which was a great way to see local Cairns.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Very safe. Our apartment complex was right next door to the local police station. Healthcare was also very good.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
