IES Abroad: Paris - Business & International Affairs

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Learned that I actually enjoy learning and speaking new languages. I have become more aware and accepting of cultural differences, from visiting diffierent countries and seeing so many tourists in Paris. I learned how to travel by myself and navigate a new city, and learn to explore the city I am living in. Pretty much learned how to be an independent adult, except I still don't know how to cook because my host mom does that ...

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

There was not much influence of an American educational system which was hard to adjust to at first. Also some of the teachers did not speak English very well, and would use French words in classes that were not French and would get frustrated when they would have to explain them in English. At the same token I had an amazing teacher that was very prominent in his field of study which made the class extremely interesting and intriguing. The French grading system doesn't make much sense, pretty much everyone gets B's and A's which is great because we are all busy with exploring Paris and traveling, so it was good that the classes weren't too hard compared to my host school and the grading system is easy. Some classes had a lot of homework, that would have to be done before class but it was never more than I could handle, other classes had virtually no homework.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Still developing their academic services, otherwise great program. Really have a great knowledge about the city and France. Had exciting field trips and "Question of the week" prizes which exposed many students to cultural aspects of the city they would have never explored before. Also the student activities staff was always up to date and willing to help answer any questions. Additionally, the director of student housing was so helpful and understanding. Academically, the program is relatively new and still developing. The academic director is not the most helpful, I would usually go to the director of the program, or the director of student affairs to get my questions answered.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Food in paris was great, a little expensive but the quality of the food here is fresh and delicious. It was hard for vegetarians to find dishes without meat, but aside from that waiters and my host mom have prepared delicious meals for me!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Going to Normandy and learning more about the European persepective of WWII was interesting to learn about especially from their view.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Try not to be too American, when you go out don't get too drunk or speak english too loud, it will attract creepy guys. Also for girls stay conservative, if you are wearing a low cut top, wear a scarf at least in the metro. If you are wearing a skirt, put tights on or wear a long coat.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I went to Paris knowing no French, and last month I completed a 5 minute presentation in French. Clearly I have learned a lot, and improved my speaking skills. The best way I learned was by watching the news and American TV shows, in French with my host mom at night. Hearing the language and seeing the visual really helped me to learn some more French, and have a good accent. Although I still speak mostly english with my host mom, sometimes we will speak French.
