ICN Business School Nancy-Metz: Nancy - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I got my foot in the door to some fantastic Master's programs - and an offer of employment. This is a great place for networking.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Personally, I love the French system. It is more fluid and intuitive, and I love having my classes chosen for me as part of a set program. There are many more classes and interesting professors than one would get in the USA.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

My host school has a remarkable network of people to help their foreign students. While at first it may seem to American students that ICN is loosely organized, there is a personal aspect that is pretty amazing. ICN will go well out of their way to make sure you get what you need.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

RWU students should without a doubt be allowed to choose their own housing. There's no question. I stayed at a different residence than the one RWU chose for us, and I couldn't have been happier. I would have been miserable in the first one.

* Food:

It is not possible to have a problem with French food. Nancy has beautiful covered markets all through town with rows and rows of fresh food, meats, and homemade cheeses. This is the most economical way of getting fresh foods, and certainly the most pleasant shopping experience. It's all local, if that's important to you.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Globe & Co. is really sweet and their events were cute. I was able to get a part-time job in a Canadian coffee shop, which is such a fun experience and a great way to earn some spending money.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Nancy is a very safe town. Female foreign students should be prepared to deal with male attention, but it does not constitute an actual threat. In terms of health, ICN makes you buy French health care for the year, so you can profit from all the French socialist healthcare system has to offer (a lot - it's nice)

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I was forced to take French lessons despite being fluent in French. Luckily, I had a nice professor who didn't make me actually go to class - I could get full credit just for taking the exam. "Advanced" class does not equal advanced level of French.

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? France is very similar to the USA. The differences are superficial, but some Americans get fixated on the differences. Come to Nancy with an open mind and enjoy a beautiful city in a beautiful country.
