Hamburg University of Applied Sciences: Hamburg - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I loved it. It changed me for sure. I am more mature now, more self confident. I now know that I can go to another country without being fluent in the language, and travel/make friends. It also gives you a better perspective on the world. I think these are common reactions to going abroad, but they are true.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It allowed more creative freedom than American schools

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The foreign students were well taken care of. Special trips were planned so we bonded together which was nice. However they were terrible when it came to handling our money for rent.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Both my American and German friends could speak english/good german so it gave me a good environment to practice. However one of my room mates was an alcoholic and living with him was frightening.

* Food:

It was alright, nothing was wrong with it or anything.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Schlager Move Parade, the Hofbrauhaus, and traveling all over germany was great. Would not have gone anywhere else.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never got horribly sick, just colds. Cold medicine/basic stuff was available at the local pharmacy. So I have no idea what the hospitals/doctor's offices were like.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

My teacher's only spoke a little english so I had to learn basic german. I got quite good.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Don't get too sucked into the party atmosphere that many exchange students create. Partying is fun sometimes but I saw a lot of kids get nothing done because of this. Control yourself.
