GEO: Vienna - Study Abroad Programs in Vienna

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This was a great experience that allowed me to grow as an individual and experience a lot of new things. I definitely became more independent after going on this trip and learned a lot about myself and how I can handle certain situations.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The education there was quite different from what I experience at my home university in the States. I really enjoyed the system we had while we were there because it allowed us to do a lot of traveling and really experience several different European cultures first hand, which in some ways allowed me to learn a lot more. I enjoyed all of the classes I took through the program and the small class sizes.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved living with a host family and a roommate from my program. We had easy accessibility to public transportation that allowed us to get to basically anywhere in the city! We were also within walking distance of the first district which had a lot of nightlife. My host mother provided us with everything we needed at our house.

* Food:

Just try to experience as many different foods as possible! Since the program only provides us with breakfast, I ate out quite a bit. It allowed me to really experience more of the Viennese culture and try a lot of things I'd never had before. It was also nice to live by a grocery store because I would pack my lunch for school.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There was a group of us that did a lot of traveling to other cities (Budapest, Prague, Salzburg, Bratislava, and Trieste)! We also went skiing in the Alps with the housing directors son and his friend!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt extremely safe in Vienna. I never really traveled alone by myself, especially at night, but I never felt like I was in danger.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I was able to practice language within the classroom as well as with my classmates outside of class, my roommate, my host mother, and the other students in my program. We used the language in everyday interactions, but we would have been fine getting around with just English. It was helpful to know some German while we were there though so we could interact with the Viennese people.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
