Chile: where the mountains, surprises, and sunsets are infinite and spectacular. Past Review

ECELA: Santiago - Spanish Immersion School in Chile

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about myself. I went into the program independently and more or less blindly. I had no idea what it was going to be like. This trip taught me to adapt... to winter when it's supposed to be summer, to people running into me blatantly on the sidewalks, to the food being vastly different than I expected. I also was able to make really close friendships and new family members and that was extremely important to me. I would say it was worthwhile you just need to be prepared mentally.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Maybe $70 but it varied occasionally
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Try to save money especially the first week because you don't know the area. I found myself spending the most money my first two weeks just because I didn't know the area and I didn't know where to buy things so I ended up buying them at the most expensive places. Only buy your essentials and ask your host family or other students they are extremely helpful.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
