Complutense University of Madrid: Madrid - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I definitely know if I travel again it will be with people I'm well acquainted with and love. I learned a lot in my classes and am interested in the opportunities academics can provide me.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I was pleased with the program courses with Reunidas. The instructors were committed and offered a lot of interesting social and cultural information. I enjoyed one of my regular university courses but the other was horrible. The instructor was not organized and his lecture was detached from the students.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The faculty was more familiar with the other universities (Wisconsin, Indiana, and Purdue). Some of the administrators had even visited the home institutions. Tulane was definitely an oddball out.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was a guest in my homestay. I was never quite taken in as a family member. I lived on a street with strip clubs and brothels which I would have liked to have been notified of prior to deciding on that homestay after I had to leave my first homestay.

* Food:

I was only given bread and spreads for breakfast. I ate the lunches at school which were ok. My dinner's at first were too large but were more well-balanced towards the end of the semester.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We took a couple field trips. They were good at presenting new information, but the faculty advisors were not particularly enthused about the trips.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

There were good days and bad days. Healthcare was accessible, a little difficult at first because of the language barrier but they accommodated me. Healtcare is not the same though.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Lunch-10 dollars (5 days a week) Metro pass- 60 dollars (one month pass over 5 months) Museums- 10 dollars (some were free!)
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Homestay was expensive. I think a lot of other people in apartments probably spent about the same. The calling company, Apelcom, our program set us up with was also expensive. Look for something else. Apelcom charged me twice after I got home too.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 324 Spanish Culture
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

We had to speak in spanish in the office. I stayed in a homestay with a family that spoke spanish. All of my courses were in spanish.

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

A Look Back

Individual Course Reviews

Course Department: Art History
Instructor: Profesora Dieguez Patao
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: This course was extremely interesting. The instructor was easy to follow. We had class every time it was scheduled so I never felt behind. The class was organized familiar to courses in the U.S. with power point presentations and lecture. There was no class participation requirement so it was nice to be able to go to class and listen with an attentive ear.
Credit Transfer Issues: It didn't count as a lecture course, but I got a high grade in the course. I recommend this course to any students in Art History or Spanish.
