CIEE: Seville - Summer Internship

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I want to travel and experience different cultures as a result of this program. Also, I would like to learn other languages to be able to better experience different cultures and possibly study abroad again in the future.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was normal in my opinion. The teaching methods were a bit different because the grading system was different, and their mindset was different in the sense that good grades were of less importance. The professors graded more difficultly.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They were always there if I needed anything. The staff was knowledgable about Sevilla and about the program as well as just there to lend an ear if I wanted to talk.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My neighborhood was very safe and relatively close to my classes. My host mom had everything well set up for me to lie. I was treated like a member of the family, but was busy and unfortunately not there often.

* Food:

I just didn't particularly like the food of Spain. It was very salty and oily.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The trip to Morocco was absolutely fantastic and beautiful. Morocco is not as popular a destination, but it is well worth the trip.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I walked all over the city and went out at night, all the while feeling safe about it. People are everywhere on the streets so you feel ok being out. The program worked with a local clinic to provide healthcare needs to students which was about the same as a US doctor's office. There were no health issues in Spain.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? No, I think the program was set up well.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? upper division
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced language at my work and with Spanish friends I made. I had to use Spanish in everyday transactions; few people spoke English.
