What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. I would go back again in a heartbeat. I learned about a culture that I did not know really existed. I learned many things academically about public health, but I also learned to laugh, dance, and communicate with others that I never thought I would get the chance too.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

We took lots of field trips in order to see first hand the public health concerns. I really thought that helped most of all.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I thought that my program instructor in Botswana was great. He always tried to fix anything if there was a problem, and he was always looking for more stuff for us to do. I thought the program was a great success and showing us Botswana's health system, but it was just a bit frustrating because I wanted to be volunteering out in the field a little more than I did.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I absolutely loved my host family. I had to travel by bus route for about forty five minutes in order to get to school everyday, but the bonds I made with the family were worth it. They were in a nice part of town and were welcoming to any needs I had.

* Food:

At some points I felt that I wanted to eat healthier than they were. They ate tons of meat and carbohydrates and I was not given much time to work out. I felt that it was a little tough to adjust to not as many fruits or vegetables.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I thought that there were lots of things to do. We went to visit weavers outside of the city, and also took trips to the Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls. They were all so much fun!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

When I became a little sick from food, the program directors were making sure I got adequate treatment right away. I always felt safe, but one can never feel fully safe anywhere I feel.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Definitely make a little spending room for traveling expenses. They rack up quickly.

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I did learn a bit of Setswana, but now I am losing it since no one I know in Iowa speaks it.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would say to enjoy yourself and take advantage of every free moment to go out and explore.
