Sydney was a magical experience where I got to learn, live and grow. Past Review

By (D'Youville College) - abroad from 08/28/2014 to 11/28/2014 with

CEA CAPA Education Abroad: Sydney, Australia

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained professional knowledge in my internship that will put me in a prepared position for graduate school. Also, I gained a network in my field that I can utilize throughout my career as it develops. The friends and connections I have made are special to me and I will keep in touch with a number of individuals from my time in Sydney. I also grew as an individual; learning about boundaries and independence and the freedom to get to know who I am. I am still reflective on this experience and using that time to move forward now.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The teachers understood that we were there to learn from out of class experiences. Many of us were taking on internships that took a lot of time and energy. I found a great balance between experiential and classroom learning with CAPA.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They were there for my preparation 100% of the way. They made sure that I checked my financial aid office, my academic advisers and they helped me keep track of my CAPA application requirements to ensure that I was accepted with the internship parameters as well.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing in Sydney was expensive, but it was clean, safe with 24 hour personnel in the lobby of the building. It was also in a neighborhood at the fringe of the city center, so it was nice to be able to walk around quieter streets with great restaurants and shops and parks.

* Food:

The food was amazing! There was great cuisine from every culture imaginable. I loved the fresh seafoods, sushi, Thai, Italian, and meat pies. The food was just so fresh. We also lived near an Aldi and Coles grocery stores, so easy access to cheap food to cook in was great!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It was hard to meet Australians living in the apartments. I made friends with other international students at my internship and I was fortunate to have befriended a hand-full of Australians that helped me get to know Sydney and gave me suggestions about what is fun to do in the city.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Health care was easy. I was fully reimbursed for cost of medications and services provided. I was not advised to get additional vaccines before departure. And there was also access to free clinics for sexual health.

* Safety:

I felt extremely safe in Sydney. There was some unrest in the city while I was there because of the political involvements and dealing with ISIS. Sydney handled the hostage situation at the Lindt cafe in the Central Business District very well. It ended unfortunately, but it was a rogue and isolated event. I do not anticipate something like this happening again in the near future.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Sydney is the most expensive city in the world. So I just had to manage my expenses. I bought the food that I needed and tried not to waste food. I still went out and had fun at restaurants and clubs. You just need to find a balance that is right for you. I was also not a big shopper and frequented weekend markets instead of retail to make my dollars go further.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Work as much as you see fit in order be able to enjoy it while you are studying abroad. So you can take the ferry to Manly, do the Sydney Bridge climb and go up to the Great Barrier Reef. So live a bit smaller at home before you go, so you can indulge abroad. A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • CAPA encouraged us to pursue our interests in the city.
  • CAPA was our insider's guide to the city, telling us events happening that were student friendly.
  • Tamara, a CAPA staff member, got to know every student and helped us reflect on our experiences and what they mean for us.
* What could be improved?
  • More integration with the local community
  • Taking students with other internationals and/or local Australians.
  • Lower the cost of housing
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? What kind of travel is truly possible because I would have delayed my flight home much longer. I met so many wonderful people and after going through the program, I grew an appreciation for Sydney, Australia, the people and the natural beauty of the ocean and land that became a part of me during my time there.

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.

Comments: It was a beautiful blend of conversation and physically going out and discovering our new home. We completed 4 tours led by our extremely knowledgeable professor in neighborhoods with special historic significance and others that displayed Sydney's ethnic diversity. The teacher was always well prepared and knowledgeable. I participated about the same or more in this class because I love to participate in discussions and learn by being a part of that process. We were assessed by two papers, a topic presentation and participation in class discussion.
Credit Transfer Issues: My credit transferred. Make sure you check in with your academic adviser to ensure that you are taking the proper classes abroad to complete your degree in a time line of your choosing.
