About

Immerse yourself in the Russian language and explore the diversity of Russophone culture in Moscow and beyond – from St. Petersburg to Siberia.

Beginning in the spring of 2018, undergraduate students from colleges and universities across the United States are invited to apply to Language and Culture in Global Russia, Carleton College’s program in Russia that has, since 1988, introduced students to the language, culture and history of this dynamically changing country. Over the course of the program, students immerse themselves in a country striving to redefine and reestablish itself culturally and economically.

The program is based in Moscow, where students study in the Philological Faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University and live in the dormitory in the university’s historic Stalin-period main building, also spending approximately two weeks in a homestay. On excursions, participants pair up with Russian students to explore corners of the city often unknown even to Muscovites. Through a variety of field trips beyond Moscow, students explore firsthand the influences that contributed to Russia’s emergence as a world power. Program field trips include Vladimir, Suzdal, Murom, St. Petersburg, and a 10-day venture to the Lake Baikal region, on the border with Mongolia.
