About

Study abroad in Sri Lanka with the Institute for Study Abroad's ISLE program!

The ISLE Program has been affiliated with the University of Peradeniya in Kandy, Sri Lanka since 1982. ISLE provides a unique combination of high-quality academics, cultural immersion, and experiential learning.

Sri Lanka is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious country that presents numerous opportunities for academic research and exploration. From important Buddhist pilgrimage sites to colonial tea estates, the island's strategic location in the Indian Ocean has placed it at the center of international trade for millennia.

The ISLE program based in Kandy, a city in the central highlands of the island. Built around a lake, surrounded by forested hills and tea estates, Kandy has a mild tropical climate that attracts seasonal visitors seeking relief from the heat and humidity along the coasts. The last capital city of the Sinhalese Kingdom, Kandy remains the center of traditional Sri Lankan culture, and music, dance, and other artistic and craft traditions are preserved and perpetuated to an extent rarely seen elsewhere on the island.

Students on the ISLE program spend the first part of their semester taking a Sinhala language course and Sri Lanka Studies Seminar. Together, these courses orient students to the local context, language and culture, and set the stage for the independent study project at the end of the semester. Students then take two elective courses in topics such as peace and conflict, women and gender studies, religion, or environmental studies. Finally, the field study component concludes the semester as students travel the island conducting primary research, or utilize the expansive ISLE library for secondary research.

Throughout the semester, students engage with the community through housing arrangements with local host families.
