About

There are different programs depending on the level of Spanish Language, that offer classes in Humanities, Political Science, Anthropology, History and other subjects related to Spain. There is also a direct enrollment program at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid for advanced students. Finally, Boston University offers specific programs for Science and Engineering students with no previous knowledge of Spanish language. All programs are equivalent to 16 BU credits, except the Engineering program which is 20 credits.

The program is composed of three levels. Madrid I students come with three to four semesters of Spanish (or the equivalent) and follow an intensive language course (equivalent to three one-semester courses) and a Spanish Civilization course, for a total of four courses equivalent to 16 credits. Qualified Madrid I students have the possibility of changing, upon completion of their semester, to the Madrid II program, which is the more usual "junior year" curriculum (literature, advanced language, history, politics, art, etc.). The language requirement for applicants to the Madrid II program is five university semesters of Spanish, or the equivalent. Internships are offered in many fields. Level III is a specialized honors program for advanced students eligible to enroll directly in coursework at the Universidad Autonoma, and available only during spring semester.

Some seventy students participate each semester, at the Instituto Internacional, Miguel Angel, 8. There they have the opportunity to attend lectures and performances by important personalities in the cultural and political life of Spain, which are offered by the various programs housed at the Instituto. In  ddition, our program includes a series of field-trips to places of particular interest throughout Spain. All the field trips and many cultural activities in Madrid, as well as round-trip expenses from the United States to Spain and room and board in Spanish private homes, are included in the program fees, which are the same as at the home campus.
