Aquincum Institute of Technology / AIT - Budapest: - Creativity in Computer Science & Software Engineering

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. I made friends from other schools all over the US and I learned what it is like to live somewhere where you are somewhat of an outsider.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment that I lived in was awesome but I lived in kind of a bad area. My roommates and I spoke to the program about it and recommended no longer housing students there.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I got Salmonella in my first week in Budapest. AIT made it pretty easy for us to see a doctor and gave us insurance at that doctor. I did not need any specific vaccines to go to Hungary. The doctors were helpful.

* Safety:

Most of the city is very safe. The only unsafe area was where I lived, which was unfortunate. We were robbed once and had one other attempted break in but I was still very happy in my semester. Lock the door to your apartment and if your bedroom has a lock then you should lock it when you leave the apartment.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

It was the most fun I've ever had. Budapest is an amazing city and the academics were not so tough that I couldn't enjoy veing abroad, but I still learned a lot and got some valuable projects under my belt.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Everything in Budapest is very cheap. A dollar goes a long way there.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Probably $100-$200 depending on the week. I went out every weekend though so that added some. Groceries / food won't cost very much.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Seek out student discounts, they are all over the city. Find cheap restaurants because they are available, but you can also of course find expensive places so it is good to check before hand.
