API (Academic Programs International): Dublin - University College Dublin

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained proof that I am going into a profession that I will enjoy, and also found a city that I would love to live in as an adult. This study abroad experience has drastically changed my plans as I am now in a relationship with a girl from my host university, and have applied to return there for my post-graduate degree.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The grading system is very different from the one used at my home university, so make sure that you know what it is before complaining about a grade as the percentages are much lower.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The resident director was extremely helpful. The international office at the university on the other hand was sometimes rude and treated international students as if we were stupid because we did not understand how their systems worked.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Try Gallagher's Boxty House in Temple Bar, and Boojum Burritos if you need a taste of home similar to Chipotle.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Weekend in London, Galway, Aran Islands and visits to various archaeological sites through a class.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I would say Dublin overall is very safe. I did not have any problems and never felt in danger at any time.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I can't remember being told about the immigration cost, but it was 150 euros.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
