Carleton Global Engagement: Women's and Gender Studies in Europe

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I was at a point where I just thought that nobody would ever do work in a way that structurally matched their ideological mission. I learned practices to make work and research more based in feminist, anti-oppression and non-violent models. I was also exposed to one of the best gender studies departments in the world, at Utrecht, and will be getting my masters on full scholarship/

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

This was the best academic experience I have had so far. Iverta Jusova, the instructor, is incredible, the speakers and the breadth of subject matter and terrain covered was remarkable, and the readings were thought provoking. Because of this, I was exposed to the opportunity to and am now attending graduate school in Hungary and the Netherlands on full scholarship.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

All of the hosts were wonderful and important activists doing interesting things

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

In Germany we all got to live with lesbian activist DJs!

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

You go to so many places and learn so much from a feminist perspective- many of the lectures are by activists who may or may not be "academics." We even got invited to the ex president of the Czech Republic's birthday celebration after being made pancakes by one of the most important women in the velvet revolution. And that was just one day.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
