AIFS: Granada - University of Granada and Internship Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This experience was life-changing. I have talked with my American friends that I made through my program while being back in the states and we have all talked about how we have changed. and it's not necessarily something you can put into words. But living in a foreign country is something that not many people get to do. And living amongst people who are unlike anything you are used to is crazy! But it makes you such a better person because you realize how alike everyone also is. People may have different cultural habits or practices but you can find common ground with just about anybody if you have an open mindset.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The grading system is very different. Working with a number scale from 1-10 instead of the letters is hard to get used to. Especially when you are taking an exam and it is only worth 10 points. It doesn't make too much sense. Also it is a lot harder to get what is considered an A because it is a 10!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Our program has an office located centrally in Granada. They were open every weekday from 8 until 6 so you could always find a time to stop by. Our administrators were so very helpful and knew everything about Granada and traveling. They also made us practice our Spanish with them so that was helpful. the office also had computers for us to use and a printer so that was nice as well!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my host family. I just lived with a roommate from my program and then an older women. she was fantastic and really helped us with our Spanish by letting us practice and teaching us words! Her cooking was fabulous. and she did laundry a lot for us which was really nice. I had to purchase my own towels.

* Food:

The food was really great, and my senora was very accommodating if we did not like particular things. Although by the end of the semester her cooking got a little tiresome because we repeated so many dishes.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

our program took us to every major attraction in Granada and we had great tour guides. We also visited other cities in Spain which was a lot of fun as well. Granada has a huge university so there are so many college-age students which makes night life so much fun! The Alhambra is magnificent and the Granada cathedral as well. going to gibrlater with our program and seeing the monkeys was so much fun!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Granada is a small city. Our program of course tried to just scare us at first so we wouldn't do stupid things like walk alone and watch out for our bags and all that stuff. But in Granada I never felt scared. We walked in the wee morning hours and I never felt threatened. While when I was in Madrid or Barcelona it was very different, but that's because those cities are bigger and a lot more hard to manage. Also if you were sick we had a number to call at all hours for our program and they would go to the hospital/doctor with us if the case arouse.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? No. they program was amazing! Studying abroad is going to cost more than you think though. You will want to shop and go out to eat and drink. And traveling to other places also costs a lot as well!

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Spanish level 1
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced amongst my American friends who wanted to also get better at Spanish. I also lived with a host family so I was able to use Spanish with them because they did not speak any English. I also made friends with a lot of Spanish university students so we were able to speak Spanish with them as well. It is important to learn Spanish while their because it makes doing things easier, although at most restaurants and hotels they can speak English as well.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The program administration was amazing
  • nothing
* What could be improved?
  • it is pefect the way it is!
  • Americans came from all over, not just my university
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? To just know that you are studying in a foreign country and that people will know you are American. Don't be that stupid American who just gets completely drunk and acts foolish. Be prepared to learn about Spanish culture and practice your Spanish. Granada is such a fun city and you can really immerse yourself in Spanish life because their are so many students who love meeting Americans and they are more than willing to practice Spanish with you!!

History of Art in Spain

Course Department: Art305
Instructor: Maria Estevez
Instruction Language: English
Comments: I did not like this teacher at all. My friends and I actually thought she was pretty terrible. I learned a lot about Spanish art which was fun but she was really bad. Maria was very knowledgeable but just taught in a way I did not like. Too much group work and not enough instruction from her

Comments: This class was a lot of fun because my teacher was awesome. We learned a lot of Spanish, the past tense and future and had fun while doing it. The only drawback was that her finale exam had a lot of surprises that no one was prepared for. Her communication about what would be on exams was lacking.
