About

Ace immersion in radiant Martinique! For six weeks, the island of flowers, Martinique, provides a unique backdrop for engaging with issues surrounding the slave trade, colonization, race, exceptional biological diversity and environmental fragility. This rich literary and cultural powerhouse has inspired intellectual movements across the US, Europe and Western Africa for centuries. Join resident experts in their fields as they guide the exploration of these topics in and out of the classroom.

Students take two courses from the following. All courses are four credit hours and taught in French.

  • Biodiversity and Medicinal Plants of the Caribbean

  • (En)Gender the Caribbean: Francophone Women Writers

  • Immigration, Slavery and Cultural Blending of the French Antilles in the Modern Era

  • Introduction to the Native Antillean Population: An Anthropological, Archaeological, and Historical Approach

  • Understanding the Environmental Context of French Departments in the Americas: The Example of Martinique

Additionally, all students receive individual placement with a welcoming host family, daily breakfast and dinners included. A host of cultural events and activities are thoughtfully planned such as a guided visit of Fort-de-France, cooking class, concerts, dance, as well as day trips to the northern and southern halves of the island, and a weekend excursion to the French island of Guadeloupe.
