What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was great getting the opportunity to always talk to a professor or expert in their field one on one. I think I developed my writing skills in a way I hadn’t touched on at Wellesley. It was worthwhile but at times felt stagnant especially if a class wasn’t content heavy.

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Quite rigorous in that you’ll have a good amount of essays. However so long as you communicate with your professors it will be a great academic experience.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I would but I would switch some of the classes I took or maybe add additional classes and explore within various fields.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

3.5= I spent most of my money buying items at the supermarket rather than eating out which made me save a lot more on food compared to other visiting students

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 500 to 100 each semester
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Learn how to cook as the dining hall food can be quite plain. Also download the club card for Tesco and nectar card for Sainsbury’s. Last hack is to get meal deals at these large supermarkets.

Comments: Academically it wasn’t very challenging the main conflict was that the second half tutor for this course was a DPHIL student who wasn’t very clear on expectations as well as progress made during the class. Moreover, compared to other Oxford tutorials which were one on one this was a lecture based format that maintained the same one on one participation expectations which were difficult to fulfill in a large group setting. Compared to other courses I was assessed via problem sets.

Intro to Criminology

Comments: This was my first time taking a criminology course and while getting used to the writing style was a bit tricky the tutor was great at communicating with me both outside and within tutorials. The readings were formulated toward my interests which was also great and made me more engaged. I’d say I participated more as this was a one on one course. I was assessed through participation and essays. The tutor was very knowledgeable on the topic and was also from the U.S. which was nice.
