An Intense but Definitely Worthwhile 3 Months Past Review

By (Wellesley College) - abroad from 09/08/2019 to 12/07/2019 with

Worcester College, University of Oxford - Visiting Students Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Definitely worthwhile. The 8 week term is very intensive but there is so much to gain from this experience. I became a much better writer and self-learner, which are skills that I could definitely translate to courses at my home institution. I had lots of free time due to the small amount of tutorials I was enrolled in, and I learned how to formulate a schedule where I could balance my work and my social life. I definitely learned how to manage my time better at Oxford and putting myself up to many challenges.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Oxford education is based on individual efforts and this study abroad experience taught me to how to pace my work and be more independent in the learning process. Though this was new and often difficult to adjust to, I came out of this experience with a new set of skills.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Administration is decentralized but I eventually learned that this is the Oxford way. Some information gets around later than expected, but everything worked out in the end without any trouble. As students, I think it is good to be flexible and willing to adjust to this unique system.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had a single room accomodation with my own bathroom and shower. I was also placed with matriculated students near my age which was nice.

* Food:

Dining hall meals were very cheap for the amount served. Formal halls are also a great way to experience traditional Oxford dining experience and I really looked forward to this experience every week.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It is up to the student to decide whether they wanted to be socially and culturally integrated. I was able to make a core group of friends through joining a society which made my immersion into Oxford much easier and more enjoyable.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I met wonderful people at Oxford, including students, staff, and professors. I experienced more than expected, culturally and academically, and would love to have had a longer time at Oxford.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cooking meals can save lots of money!
