About

The main focus of the course will be engagement in existing health care courses currently offered annually in July by University Utrecht and HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht.  Students may choose one course among various summer course offerings;  Nurses Work, Nursing Management and Clinical Leadership, Healthy Aging, Kinetics Therapy, Multi-professional Cooperation in Stroke Management, Pediatric Onlcology Nursing, Eye Care and Diabetes, Rehabilitation of the Hand, Depression Management and Suicide Prevention are among the possibilities. Each course will be a combination of didactic and experiential learning.
While in the Netherlands the students will interact with other students, faculty and health care providers there. In preparation, students will attend two 3 hour sessions that will give them an overview of the course, the culture of the Netherlands, and travel preparation. There will be assignments for students to complete between the first and second sessions. Content will include:

  • specific course expectations

  • an overview of Dutch customs and values, including the increasingly multi-cultural nature of Dutch society

  • the Dutch education system

  • the Dutch political and economic system and current issues

  • survival Dutch phrases

  • survival skills, including transportation and shopping

These sessions will also assist students in preparing for the course by reviewing and preparing presentations on the United States health care system and health care education and practice in the United StatesStudents applying for this program may be eligible for the Haenicke Institute for Global Education Study Abroad Scholarship.
