What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I became much more fluent in French and learned how to live independently in a different culture. It was very much worthwhile.

I mostly cooked for myself, but Aix has great outdoor markets for produce.

I did not seek health care during my stay.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Aix is expensive, especially if you live in an apartment (you have to buy groceries and things for the apartment, as well as pay for laundry), but I was able to save money by cooking all of my meals.

  • Sponsored trips around France
  • Course on French-English translation

* What could be improved?
  • Offer preparatory class on the French academic system/expectations every semester (not just for fall)
  • More time to adjust to Aix before classes begin (hopefully the academic calendar is better in future years)
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would have liked to know more about AMU and the nature of university education in France before starting, so that I would have been more prepared.
