Wayne State University: Junior Year in Munich

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned about Munich and Bavaria, and my experience at the German university gave me a deep insight into the life of German young adults

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academic rigor of the courses at the program was challenging, and the courses offered at the German university were very difficult but all the more rewarding.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The on-site administration was absolutely phenomenal, and no other program that I have heard of in Germany or anywhere else offers as many meaningful resources as JYM does.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The Studentenstadt was very fun to live at!

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Our program made an excellent effort to assimilate the students and introduce us to German culture. We were much more integrated into the local culture than any other international students that I encountered during my time in Munich.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I went to the dentist during my time in Germany, and everything went very smoothly. JYM administration helped me organize all the payments, and our insurance from the program even covered half of my treatment. Healthcare was a very smooth experience for everyone that I know of who had to use the service.

* Safety:

Munich is very safe, and JYM helps to keep everyone safe as well.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

This program is hands down the best in Germany, as stated by faculty, students, Germans, and myself (a German-American dual citizen)

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Munich is expensive, but one can easily live on a range of budgets.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Our program was language-based, which proved to set us apart from every other international student that I encountered in all of Munich. We consistently were the best-prepared German speakers.

How many hours per day did you use the language?
