What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
it was definitely worthwhile to be there in this setting: I met a lot of great people and had many great experiences because of it. However, because of this exchange program I will have to do another semester of school.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Students didn't work as hard as UT students. Some wouldn't even attend class. The grading system was very different as well, so it caused some problems with what will transfer over to my school. For them,what's more important is whether they failed or not, but here, grades are important. Furthermore, if they fail, it's not as drastic as it would be here because they can just retake the exam a couple months later. The classes weren't as organized. Students have to take more of an initiative for themselves to stay on task and do the work since usually the final exam is the sole determinant for whether they will pass the class or not. In my classes, professors only provided lectures.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Lived in an apartment a 25 minute walk from my university building

It wasn't too far from the school, close to some good night life, several markets close by, friends lived close by, metro close by, safe

* Food:

made our own food which was really cheap. eating out was expensive and several restaurants weren't very good.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There were many things to see and do in Valencia and living in Europe makes it very easy to travel to other countries in Europe.

* Safety:

I never worried about being in danger of health or crime. However, i would not want to have to use the hospital there as it takes forever to get service.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? No. It was only expensive for me because I did so much traveling on the holidays and weekends.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Course Department: filologia hispanica 13891
Instructor: sergio lopez
Instruction Language: spanish
Comments: It was difficult to understand the lectures at first because of the language. (I wasn't accustomed to hearing Spaniard Spanish so quickly). The professors did know the material very well and encouraged student participation. However, I really didn't appreciate that they switched professors on us in the middle of the semester. I had finally got a hold of the first professor and figured out how I should study for the class, then the faculty changed our professor for another who had a different method of teaching and a different curriculum for the class. The workload recommended was tremendous (especially since I didn't understand the language as well as local students).

Comments: I had no idea what I was supposed to do in this class. He lectured endlessly for every class and without much order. He also refused to tell us how the final exam was going to be like.
