What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was very worthwhile. I obtained a better understanding of and respect for the large amount of work that is involved in curating a museum.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Could be made better if there were more people who could speak Portuguese other than just the professor

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration's strength lay in its ability of getting our group access to areas of museum not available to most people and classes rarely available to Americans. Its weakness was in how most education responsibilities were with the professor with little assistance from the TAs

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The neighborhood and building was nice and very clean. I had no problems with the apartment.

The neighborhood was safe and close to our classroom. Everything was provided. We didn't have to buy anything.

* Food:

Too much take-out food. Failed to allow to cook for ourselves every once and awhile

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I liked the festival of St. John, and our many field trips to castros, Portuguese towns, and Spain.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Vila do Conde was very safe. There was a pharmacy on the first floor of the apartment.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would lower the amount of money paid for take-out food and allow that money to be spent on groceries so the students could cook for themselves more often.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
