A Texan's Time in Straya Past Review

By (Kinesiology and Exercise Science., The University of Texas at Austin) - abroad from 07/04/2013 to 11/30/2014 with

University of Technology - Sydney (UTS): Sydney - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Personal growth, self-confidence, self-dependency, etc. Definitely worthwhile!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The people were great but the building has a lot of flaws. Fire alarms went off ALL the time. We also had an evacuation that lasted at least 2 nights, housing wasn't organized nor did we have a place to sleep for the first night. Also, the internet in Yura Mudang is the absolute worst. Curfew was also silly, both for drinking in the common areas and for getting into the building late at night.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Injured my foot while abroad, fast forward 6 months later and I STILL haven't received compensation for the medical fees I had to pay while over there.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Australia is one of the most expensive countries in the world.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Depends on how much of a social life you want to have. Going to clubs/bars costs a lot, especially when there's also a cover fee to get in.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Save up before studying abroad and if possible, find a flexible job (such as babysitting) once over there.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Meeting people from all over the world
  • Being able to travel more than just Sydney
* What could be improved?
  • Explain more/better about how insurance works and what to do if/when injured abroad
  • Give a more realistic cost estimation (emphasizing on spending money, not just program fees)
  • Perhaps give students help/tips for finding flexible jobs while abroad
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? How much money it actually cost to be over there and to do all the things I did (I didn't even get to do everything I wanted to due to time and money). And also about how much I didn't want to leave at the end of it.
