Lots of math, no time for much else Past Review

By (Mathematics, Middlebury College) - abroad from 10/08/2013 to 01/19/2014 with

University of Oxford - Visiting Students

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot of math, but it was not worthwhile because I did not have time to engage with the local culture or take advantage of being abroad. I only had time for math.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The Mathematics courses I took at Oxford were very rigorous. However, I found that the 2nd year students were very supportive and helped me manage my workload. The tutors were also very helpful and approachable. That being said, because of how intense the workload was I felt as though I lived in the library. Unlike many of my other classmates from Middlebury who studied abroad at other institutions, I did not have time to travel at all during my time abroad as I was bogged down with work the entire term.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everyone at Lincoln College was very helpful. Both the Senior Tutor and my Mathematics tutors were always available via email or were willing to set up a time to meet in person. Communication was generally very clear and rapid.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing at Lincoln was very good. I had a single in college with it's own bathroom. It was larger than any room I ever had at Middlebury with beautiful views of the chapel quad and the Radcliffe Camera. However, there were some issues with wifi due to the thick walls. Additionally, the windows were single pane and the door had a large gap underneath it meaning that the room was quite drafty and got pretty cold at times.

* Food:

The food at Lincoln was pretty good and I always left hall feeling full. That being say, there are far fewer options at Lincoln than at Middlebury. It was hard to get fruit or vegetables and I found that I was not eating a balanced diet as a result. I had to go outside of the college dining facilities to fulfill my dietary needs.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I was very please with how well Lincoln integrated the Middlebury students with the other incoming students. We were treated as normal international students and were fully integrated within student life at Oxford. This made it very easy to make British friends.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I got very sick at the end of Michaelmas term. I had a fever for about a week and had a very difficult time getting a doctor's appointment due to the National Health Service in England. I had to eventually make an emergency appointment before a doctor would see me. It was very frustrating.

* Safety:

Oxford felt very safe during my time there. I never had any safety issues.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I didn't really keep track of my expenses.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I didn't really keep track of my expenses.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? No

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Academic or Linguist
You went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you. You had a great time abroad, but never lost sight of your studies and (if applicable) were diligent with your foreign language study. Good for you!

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Quantum Theory

Course Department: Mathematics
Instructor: Prof. Tod
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The course was very challenging. Location was not relevant to this course. The teacher was knowledgeable and well-prepared, but never answered his email. Participation was not an aspect of this class. We had one problem set due every two-weeks (but they were very difficult). The tutor for this course, Daniel Farquet, was excellent and very helpful.
Credit Transfer Issues: Unknown, have not received transcript from Oxford yet.
Course Name/Rating:

Probability

Course Department: Mathematics
Instructor: Dr. Goldschmidt
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Probability was my favorite course at Oxford. It was challenging, but very rewarding. The tutor for this course, James Watson, is amazing!
Credit Transfer Issues: Unknown, have not yet received my transcript from Oxford.
Course Name/Rating:

Differential Equations I

Course Department: Mathematics
Instructor: Peter Grindrod
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course covered 2nd Order PDEs. The course was taught in a new format for the first time this year. They will be making changes next year so this review may not be relevant. The issue with the course was that it tried to incorporate too much pure math in an applied setting. The tutor for this course, Dr. Trinh, made the best of the situation and put a lot of extra effort in to ensure that we learned the material. He was so helpful!
Credit Transfer Issues: Unknown, have not received my transcript yet from Oxford.

Real Analysis I: Sequences and Series

Course Department: Mathematics
Instructor: Dr. Priestly
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Dr. Priestly often forgot proofs during class and couldn't finish them. It was very frustrating. That being said, the course material was very interesting. Unfortunately, the tutor for this course, Dr. Wang, was a little difficult to understand at times and had very poor handwriting.
Credit Transfer Issues: Unknown, have not yet received my transcript from Oxford.
