Life-changing semester in a unique host country! Past Review

By (Susquehanna University) - abroad from 01/19/2017 to 05/31/2017 with

University of Nicosia - Global Semesters: Nicosia - Semester in Europe (Multi-country)

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about different types of people and what makes everyone so unique in their own culture. I also gained a lot of experience communicating with and listening to people of different countries and cultures. Traveling and being immersed in culture is the best way to learn a lot about the world we live in!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Professors and students frequently showed up late to class, if at all, and expectations were usually very unclear. Definitely not the educational experience I'm used to having at my home school.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Administration was very helpful during my time abroad. The only thing I would suggest is getting the spring break itinerary out a lot sooner, because it was hard to plan free time with only a two week's notice of our itinerary.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Our apartment was beautiful and very comfortable. I couldn't have asked for better living arrangements.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Cyprus was not my first choice. I was actually supposed to go to South Africa to study abroad and two months before my departure, had to change programs and Cyprus was one of a few left available. I would probably not go back for a semester because the island is so small and it's rather expensive to get to a lot of different countries. However, I really did enjoy my time while there.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Start saving early before you leave for your semester abroad and make sure to try and use your money wisely while abroad for things like traveling and unique experiences rather than material things.

  • Communication
  • University of Nicosia educational experience
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew how small the island was and that there isn't much to see in Cyprus itself that the program already takes you on. I also wish I had made more of an effort to form more relationships with locals while there.
