University of Nicosia - Global Semesters: Nicosia - Semester in Europe (Multi-country)

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Studying abroad is absolutely worth it. I learned more about myself, my values, and learned to be much more accepting.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The teaching style, like the culture of Cyprus, is very laid back. While this is good because more time is spent on a specific topic, the amount of material that needs to be covered in the class is not done.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Plans are sent out way to close to the date of the actual event. Plans should be sent sooner, and then if need be sent a couple of days before the event as well.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment was nice, however the beds were very uncomfortable, while this is fine for a few weeks it is not okay for an entire semester.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Clubs at the school did not reach out for us to join, even though we went through the explained process to try a join the clubs. Therefore more time is spent with Erasmus students, instead of with other Cypriots.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I would pick a place located closer to Europe, while being near the Middle East leads to different experiences so many of those are limited because of safety reasons. I would also pick a university that challenged the students more, while it was nice to have an easy semester, I can already tell I will be behind my classmates because my major is nursing, this will affect all my other courses and will only make my future studies even harder.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Save money while in your host country, travel will consist of the bulk of the budget.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The people in the program
  • The beaches of Cyprus
* What could be improved?
  • Use of time- We are still Americans at heart :)
  • Instead of "study week" make it a global semesters exam week. UNIC obviously wants international students and I have a feeling would accommodate this, none of my professors had a problem with moving my exams. Many of us have internships we need to get home for or other things like that, and we are limited because the "end date" is so late, when in reality there is no need for such a late end date.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? School does not actually last as long as the dates say, this would have allowed for me to do much more this summer.

The Academic or Linguist
You went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you. You had a great time abroad, but never lost sight of your studies and (if applicable) were diligent with your foreign language study. Good for you!
