University of Limerick: Limerick - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I did an exchange program, so I happened to be the only student from UT to study abroad at UL. Turned out to be one of the most eyeopening and best experiences of my life. I would recommend an exchange program to anyone studying abroad. The international society on campus had so many different events to meet people, that I quickly become friends with a lot of international students from different countries. I learned a lot about the different perspectives on life that different cultures have. Also, because I was an exchange student I got to take classes with local students rather than just international students ,because of this I felt really immersed in the country I was studying abroad in.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Classes were not hard during the semester, but finals at the end of the courses were a little overwhelming. One final exam was normally worth 70% of your grade.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in a 5 person co-ed house. There was a mix of irish and exchange students in our house. This mix of cultures was one of my favorite parts of my study abroad experience. We all got to know each other really well.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

They have lots of international events and trips every week. These are great, because you get to meet and become friends with people from all over the world.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I went to their healthcare facility once and they were very helpful. There were no problems with getting an appointment right away.

* Safety:

The university is a little ways outside the city so it was very safe to walk around at night. In the city centre, I felt very safe walking around during the day, but like anywhere else at night it was better to be with a group of people.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $300

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • My host university
  • Traveling
  • Lasting friendships that I made with other international students
* What could be improved?
  • Pre-departure information
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I would have known a little bit more about the school and grading system. I think my exchange program was fairly new, so there was not anyone I could talk to about their experience at University of Limerick before I left.
