A wonderful time in a beautiful city January 20, 2023

University of Edinburgh: Edinburgh - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a greater appreciation for travel and diving deep into the places I live.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was not as difficult as my home university but the lectures and seminars were incredibly engaging and I learned a lot.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My accommodation had a lot of maintenance issues (specifically with the front doors) and these were not resolved that quickly but the people who helped were very nice. The location was very central, my room was big and clean, and I had access to a kitchen with lots of cabinet space.

* Food:

I cooked for myself but groceries were very affordable.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Because I was only there a semester, most of my friends ended up being fellow international students. The UK is also not very different from the US. I feel as though I was more integrated with UK culture as a whole than Scottish culture, but I think this would have changed if I was there longer.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't register for a GP and this was a mistake because when I was sick for the entire month of October I wasn't able to get an appointment. I was able to talk to pharmacists, who were very helpful, and get over the counter medication very easily, which helped a lot.

* Safety:

Edinburgh is a city so, like with any city, you need to be aware of your surroundings, but I found it to be very very safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved the University of Edinburgh specifically because of its location. I wish I could have spent more time there.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 40-50 GBP

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The city and its walkability and accessible opportunities for students
  • The people
  • The apartment style housing
* What could be improved?
  • Increased space in orientation activities for international students
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? That time will go by so quickly and the sun sets so early that by mid October you don't have much time to be outside. I wish I had taken more day trips earlier in the semester because of this.
