more difficult than I'd anticipated but positive and life-changing nonetheless Past Review

By (PSYCHOLOGY., Middlebury College) - abroad from 09/17/2014 to 12/13/2014 with

University of East Anglia: Norwich - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained more self-confidence in my ability to be independent. I gained a sense of what life post-college will be like in terms of preparing mills and scheduling myself, etc. I learned that everyone's experiences are necessarily different because of things like money or resources, but that everyone can still get a lot out of their abroad experience regardless of how much money they have.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academics were a bit lacking. I had way too much free time and a lot of the students (and professors) didn't seem to care about their work as much...mostly because the majority of work aside from finals was optional.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

No dining halls but it was a good experience to buy and cook my own food

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Apparently norwich is the safest city in England.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It was doable. I had to eat slightly less sometimes to make the money work and if I had been there any longer it definitely would not have worked.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? £80-£100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Buy food that keeps for a long time. Plan your meals so that no food goes to waste and you know exactly what to buy.

* What could be improved?
  • Bigger stipend
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Traveling while abroad is something that requires a lot of money. I realized that I would not get to travel every weekend like many of my wealthier friends, and for a while that made me alightly bitter and sad. But you have to learn to be thankful what you can do, and enjoy the rarity of the occasions you can afford.

Comments: This was my least favorite class and challenging in a different way. Challenging because it was so boring and the instructor would lecture for 2.5-3 hours. Slideshows were lacking and text heavy. Everyone was disengaged
