University of Cambridge, Pembroke College: Cambridge - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely. I think I learned more about myself, just being at a University so different from Wellesley. I am so grateful for this privilege. I am interested in going back at some point to get an MPhil in English.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I am double majoring in English and Philosophy but chose to study Philosophy at Cambridge, mainly because the English department at Wellesley only accepted so much credit from courses taken abroad. Of my two majors, however, I later realized English would be a much better fit for Cambridge, in terms of the system, and in terms of my background in the subject. The unique academic system at Cambridge I think can be either a blessing or a curse, and it's important to factor that in when decided what to study.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program was perfect in that it was not overbearingly organized with activities, etc, but also not wholly absent. I particularly liked the size of our group - 24 students.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Felt very safe, the living arrangements were perfect. I happened to be located in Pembroke College housing, an ideal situation. However, I know that where we are housed is very much a matter of chance, and others were not so satisfied with their location.

* Food:

Self-catered, with a cafeteria available. Satisfactory.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There were very few events actually organized by our program, but they pointed us in the right direction. Of course, in Cambridge, the most memorable things are May Balls.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt very safe in Cambridge. Someone did steal my bike, but that wasn't entirely unexpected (meaning I knew that happened in Cambridge with some frequency.)

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Expect to spend more money on food than you think you will. It's inevitable.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

Direct Enrollment/Exchange
