Tufts Programs Abroad: Tufts in London

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Best year of my life. If I had the chance to do it again, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Full-Year 2008

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Like any university, there will be good and bad professors--it depends on the classes you take. That said, mine were all better than the ones I had at Tufts.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Jaki is awesome. Ian is awesome. TiL will not be the same without them. The organization of it all is quite well done, cannot complain about any aspects of it. They're knowledgeable about travel as well as Tufts requirements too.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

University housing, in center of campus-shared kitchen with 9 other people. Big size as well

* Food:

depends on your own cooking

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Again, amazing-tons of events (every other week, at least), dinners, football matches, musicals/plays...TiL spoils us.

* Safety:

They make it as safe as possible, but it's a city...the things your mom said about being safe actually apply here. Pickpockets are common, thefts not rare...

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? £94/week goes a lot longer than you'd expect--probably spent around £30-40/week on food if you shop at Sainsburys or Tesco, so expect to have a fair bit left for travel or luxury.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Mobile bill adds up, as does initial investment in plates/pots/silverware

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Fluent

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Go for the full year. I was uncertain about one term versus one year, but the full year makes it all worthwhile--I wish I could have stayed longer.
